What to Bring on Your First Locum Tenens Assignment: The Complete Packing Guide

Nobody tells you what to actually pack for a locum assignment. They tell you to "bring your credentials and a good attitude." Great. Very helpful.

Here's what you actually need — the stuff that makes the difference between a miserable first week and feeling like you've done this a hundred times. Every item on this list exists because someone learned the hard way.

Hotel Room Security

You're sleeping in places where you don't know who else has a key. Housekeeping, maintenance, the previous guest who never returned theirs. Two items fix this:

Sleep Gear — The Most Important Category

Bad sleep ruins assignments. Hotel blackout curtains are never truly blackout, the HVAC cycles on and off all night, and if you're doing nights or 24-hour call, sleeping during the day in a bright room is basically impossible.

Noise-Canceling Headphones — Sony WH-1000XM5 (~$300) if you want the best. Anker Soundcore Space One (~$80) if you want 90% of the performance at a third of the price. Use them on flights, in noisy call rooms, and during charting sessions. The Sony pairs to your phone and laptop simultaneously so you can listen to music while still catching calls from the hospital operator.

Power and Connectivity

Hotel rooms have one accessible outlet behind a nightstand. Rural hospitals have spotty WiFi. Solve both problems:

Food and Cooking — Save $300-500/Month

Hospital cafeterias close at 7pm. You're working until 7am. The vending machine becomes your dinner if you don't plan ahead.

Instant Pot Duo Mini 3-Quart (~$65) — Pressure cooker, slow cooker, rice cooker, steamer — all in one. The 3-quart is sized for one person and fits in a checked bag. After a 12-hour shift, dump chicken, rice, and broth in, press a button, eat in 15 minutes. This is the #1 most recommended item on every travel nurse forum and it's not close.

3-Day Emergency Food Supply — Pack protein bars, nuts, instant oatmeal packets, and jerky in your carry-on. If your flight diverts or you arrive at a rural assignment after 10pm, nothing will be open. Having 3 days of food means you're not skipping meals on Day 1.

Coffee — Because Obviously

Packing Your Scrubs

Don't fold scrubs — roll them. Here's why:

1. Buy poly/cotton or poly/rayon blend scrubs, not 100% cotton. Blends resist wrinkling dramatically better.
2. Roll each set tightly — top wrapped around bottoms — instead of folding. Rolling curves the fabric instead of creating hard crease lines.
3. Put rolled sets inside compression packing cubes and compress after rolling.
4. Unpack and hang immediately when you arrive.
5. If they're still wrinkled: hang them in the bathroom during a hot shower. Steam relaxes the fabric in 10 minutes.

Documents and Credentials

Luggage

For a 4-13 week assignment, you need one checked bag and one carry-on. The checked bag handles scrubs, cooking gear, and the Instant Pot. The carry-on handles your laptop, documents, 3-day food supply, and anything you can't afford to lose.
